Welcome to the IPC Alliance BD
The COVID-19 pandemic (2020) has signified the importance and establishment of Infection Prevention Control (IPC) activities in healthcare settings of the country. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Akram Hossain, founder of the IPC Alliance, BSMM along with an ambitious and enthusiastic team of seven microbiologists and virologists (Dr. Mahfuza Nasrin, Dr Shaheda Anwar, Dr. Suma Mita Biswas, Prof. Dr. Fahmida Begum, Dr. Israt Sadia, Dr. N.M. Wahidur Rahman.) started their IPC journey since February 2020 intending to work on IPC activities, develop an antimicrobial stewardship program, knowledge sharing, training on IPC, and human resource development for IPC activity. However, in 2005, the Infection Control and Prevention Program in Bangladesh (ICPPB) commenced their activities with Prof. Dr. Zahidul Hasan, as Chairman and Dr. Mohammad Murshed as Secretary, and they continued their dedicated service for IPC Alliance. Gradually, the IPC alliance incorporated multidisciplinary public health specialists and laboratory experts under the Bangladesh Society of Medical Microbiologists (BSMM) who worked closely with the disease control unit of the Directorate General of Health Services and supported IPC training for health care personnel and monitoring of IPC practices in hospitals. The alliance provided training to more than 1000 healthcare workers, including health managers, doctors, nurses, medical technologists, and support staff in collaboration with the Directorate. HAI surveillance (catheter-associated urinary tract infection, central line-associated BSI, ventilatorassociated pneumonia, surgical site infection) was initiated in five tertiary Hospitals of Dhaka city (capital of Bangladesh) from 1 April 2023, including the formulation of a National Antibiotic Stewardship Policy. Online webinars were organized involving the presidents and members of various clinical societies to form a multidisciplinary hospital infection control society, with online continuing medical education modules on antimicrobial stewardship.
Background for IPC Alliance
The alliance has been formed to practice Hospital Infection Prevention and Control in Bangladesh.
It is estimated that about 10% of patients admitted to acute care hospitals acquire infections i.e. 2
million patients/year with 90,000 deaths/year with an attributable annual cost: $4.5 – $5.7 billion.
HAI results in prolonged hospital stays, long-term disability, increased resistance of
microorganisms to antimicrobials, massive additional costs for health systems, high costs for
patients and their families, and unnecessary deaths. A Workshop on Hospital Infection Prevention
and Control, held at JIPMER, Pondicherry, India, was attended by a team of enthusiastic medical
Microbiologists who were highly motivated by Dr. Apurba Sastry, Additional Professor of
Microbiology and Infection Control Officer with his revolutionary vision. The team realized the
need for similar IPC activities in Bangladesh through knowledge sharing and dissemination with
the support of Dr. Apurba Sastry.
